You can test the sensors in your smartphone. Here are the supported sensors:

  • Accelerometer
  • Light sensor
  • Proximity sensor
  • Magnetometer
  • Gyroscope
  • Barometer (pressure sensor)
  • Compass

If a sensor is registered in the system, it will have a green indicator; otherwise, it will be red.

If a sensor doesn't report any data, it will have a label "no data" on the sensor test screen. In most cases, this means that the device doesn't have that type of sensor installed or it's not functioning properly.

If all sensors don't report any data, it usually indicates a problem with communication between the sensors and the sensor service. This often happens after a firmware update, and not all apps may be able to use the sensors.

The total available sensors count is displayed and can be clicked to open a list of the sensors. You can test all of them using the graph view.

This app is also useful for developers who build custom kernels.

Details:

Accelerometer

- Measures acceleration along three axes: x, y, z; unit of measurement: m/s^2

When oriented along the axis, the normal value is equal to the gravitational acceleration (g = ~9.8 m/s^2). With the device in a horizontal position, the values along the axes are: z = ~9.8 m/s^2, x = 0, y = 0).

Practice:

Used to automatically change the orientation of the screen when you rotate the device, as well as in games, etc.

Description of test:

Test with a football. When the device is tilted, the ball should move in the direction of inclination. Try to score the ball into the goal.

Light sensor

- Measures illumination; unit of measurement: lux

Practice:

Used to automatically adjust the brightness (auto brightness).

Description of test:

Test with a lamp. When increasing the illumination, the glow around the lamp changes from white to bright yellow. Move the device towards or away from the light source, or go into a dark room. Approximate typical values: room - 150 lux, office - 300 lux, sunny day - 10,000 lux and above.

Proximity sensor

- Measures the distance between the device and an object; unit of measurement: cm

On many devices, only two values are available: "far" and "close".

Practice:

Used to turn off the screen when you hold the phone close to your face during a call.

Description of test:

Test with a lamp. Cover the sensor with your hand to simulate an object being nearby, and observe that the light goes out; then uncover it to see the light come back on.

Magnetometer

- Measures magnetic field readings in three axes. The resulting value is calculated based on them; unit of measurement: mT

Practice:

Used for programs like compass.

Description of test:

Test using a scale with a level indicator. Move the device close to a metal object, and the value on the scale should increase.

Gyroscope

- Measures the speed of rotation of the device around the three axes: x, y, z; unit of measurement: rad/s

Practice:

Used in various multimedia programs, such as camera apps for creating panoramas.

Description of test:

Shows a graph of the speed of rotation along the x, y, and z axes. When stationary, the values should tend towards 0.

Barometer (pressure sensor)

- Measures atmospheric pressure; unit of measurement: mbar or mm Hg. (switch in settings)

Description of test:

Test using a scale with a level indicator that shows the current pressure value.

Normal atmospheric pressure:

100 kPa = 1000 mbar = ~750 mm Hg.
